Could you help to support a Credit Union for Merton?

There are currently plans to develop a cross-borough Credit Union for Croydon, Merton and Sutton and help from local voluntary sector organisations is particularly needed.

An application will be going to the Financial Services Authority (FSA) in October this year, and as part of this application there has to be evidence of support from both local individuals and organisations. You and your organisation could show your support simply by submitting a letter  – please see the attached template, below.

You could also support this development by helping to encourage individual pledges:

  • Do you have a newsletter/website which we could carry an article?
  • Are you undertaking a postal mailing to local residents where a pledge flyer could be included?
  • Do you have a reception area or are you attending meetings where you could display pledge flyers?
  • Can you encourage your staff to pledge their support?

Why support these developments?

This Credit Union will be open to everyone who lives and works in Merton and will:

  • Encourage and support members to save
  • Be open to those on low incomes or welfare benefits
  • Provide members with access to low cost loans
  • Help to keep money in the local area
  • Have no shareholders so any profits will go to members

Please contact Sue Neville at Merton Council if you are able to support this development in any way, and remember to pledge your support as an individual too!
