New Equality Commission Created
[12 October 2007]
On 1st October 2007, the Equality and Human Rights Commission was established. It unites the powers and duties of the three former equality commissions, namely, the Commission for Racial Equality, the Disability Rights Commission, and the Equal Opportunities Commission.
The merger marks a new phase in addressing equality and tackling discrimination. It is hoped it will bring many benefits such as: offering itself as a single point of access for the voluntary and public sectors, businesses, experts, and individuals; and, providing assistance to people who suffer multiple discrimination. Its work will echo that of its forerunners in terms of enforcing and influencing the law, nurturing better human relations, and influencing government policy.
The Commission has a dedicated website with accessible information previously held on the sites of the three commissions. The site address is www.equalityhumanrights.com
