Pay Scales For Youth Work
Many youth groups struggle when trying to identify information about what rates of pay they should make for their part time staff. There are two avenues you can go down (a) pay in line with local government scales (NJC) or (b) pay in line with national youth work rates (JNC).
I have sumerised here what rates are used by the local authority based on NJC.
Trainee Worker (entry level pre-induction and probation) Scale 3 pt 14-17
Qualified Worker (post induction training/probation and/or NVQ2) Scale 4 pt 18 - 21
Trainee Leader In Charge (in a Leadership position and or undergoing NVQ3 training) Scale 5 pt 22 – 25
Worker in Charge (Qualified to NVQ3) Scale 6 pt 26 – 28
You can get an update of the NJC Pay Scales from this link as this is a good site to keep up to date with employment law etc. specific to local government rates:
Also MVSC have a salary calculator resourse which will help you work out what your liability will be in regards to NI and salary required to pay staff. Please click this link to download.
The other site and possibly a good one to become a member of; is the community & youth work union (CYWU) where you will get up to date information the JNC rates and responsibilities.
The main question you will need to ask yourself is if you will follow NJC or JNC pay & conditions. For more support on this please contact Rob Mobile (youth groups developemnt worker at MVSC)
Hope this helps
