Londoners respond to consultation on stroke and trauma service
Londoners have voiced broad support for proposals to improve NHS stroke and trauma services, according to consultation figures released today by Healthcare for London. The proposals include plans for a major trauma centre and a hyper-acute stroke unit at St Georges and a local stroke unit at St Helier.
Nearly 11,000 people responded to the 14-week consultation, which ran from 30 January to 8 May 2009. A final decision on the plans is expected to take place on 20 July.
The results of the 8,600 consultation questionnaires submitted by individuals and organisations were analysed by Ipsos MORI and show:
- On stroke care: 73% agree with the proposal that specialist stroke care should be provided in hyper-acute stroke units, local stroke units and TIA units
- 71% agree that eight hyper-acute stroke units would provide the best urgent care for stroke patients in London, with 61% supporting Healthcare for London’s preferred location of units
- 75% agree the proposed configuration of over 20 local stroke units
- 75% agree with the proposed configuration of transient ischaemic attack (TIA) units
- On trauma care: 87% support the creation of four major trauma networks, with 51% supporting Healthcare for London’s preferred option of establishing major trauma centres at The Royal London Hospital, St George’s Hospital, King’s College Hospital and St Mary’s Hospital.
